Ponggal - Explained

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Thai Pongal (Tamil: தைப்பொங்கல்) is a harvest festival equivalent to a thanksgiving event celebrated by Tamils across the world. Pongal coincides with the festival Sankranthi celebrated in various parts of India. Pongal in Tamil means "boiling over or spill over." The act of boiling over of milk in the clay pot is considered to denote future prosperity for the family.

On January 2008, the Tamilnadu Government anounced that Pongal will be celebrated as 'Tamil New Year' from 2009 CE ..

Traditionally celebrated at harvest time, it's a celebration of the prosperity associated with the harvest by thanking the rain, sun and the farm animals that have helped in the harvest. In villages, new clothes are worn and people owning cows find this festival important. Pongal is celebrated by the Indian state of Tamil Nadu as well as Tamils worldwide, including those in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius, South Africa, USA, Canada and Singapore. The festival is at least 1000 years old although some believe that the festival is more than 2000 years old. As per epigraphic evidence, it used to be celebrated as Puthiyeedu during Medieval Chola empire days. It is thought that Puthiyeedu meant the first harvest of the year.People of all religions celebrate the pongal festival.Tamils refer to Pongal as "Tamizhar Thirunal" (meaning "the festival of Tamils"). This festival originated in Tamil Nadu. The saying "Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum" (தை பிறந்தால் வழி பிறக்கும்) meaning "the birth of the month of Thai will pave the way for new opportunities" is often quoted regarding the Pongal festival. Usually, the festival takes place January 12 — 15 (on the Gregorian calendar). The festival is celebrated four days from the last day of the Tamil month Maargazhi (December — January) to the third day of Thai (January — February). The first day, Bhogi, is celebrated by throwing away and destroying old clothes and materials, by setting them on fire, marking the end of the old Thai and the emergence of the new Thai.

The second day, Pongal, is the main day, falling on the first day of the Tamil month Thai (January 14 — 15). Also known as Sarkarai Pongal or Veetu Pongal, it is celebrated by boiling rice with fresh milk and jaggery in new pots, which are later topped with brown sugar, cashew nuts and raisins early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel. This tradition gives Pongal its name.

The moment the rice boils over and bubbles out of the vessel, the tradition is to shout of "Ponggalo Ponggal!" and blowing the sangu (a conch), a custom practiced during the festival to announce it was going to be a year blessed with good tidings. For Tamils, it is considered a good sign to watch it boil over, since it means that good luck and prosperity is forthcoming. Then New boiled rice is offered to the Nature during sunrise, a gesture which symbolises thanks to the sun and nature for providing prosperity. It is later served to the people present in the house for the ceremony. People also prepare savories and sweets such as vadai, murukku, payasam and visit each other and exchange greetings.

The third day, Maattu Pongal, is for offering thanks to cattle, as they help farmer in different ways for agriculture. On this day the cattle are decorated with paint, flowers and bells. They are allowed to roam free and fed sweet rice and sugar cane. Some people decorate the horns with gold or other metallic covers. In some places, Jallikattu, or taming the wild bull contest, is the main event of this day and this is mostly seen in the villages.

During the final day, Kaanum Pongal (the word kaanum means "to view") people visit their relatives, friends to enjoy the festive season, but in the cities this day is synonymous with people flocking to beaches and theme parks to have a day out with their families. They also chew sugar cane and decorate their houses with kolam. This day is a day to thank relatives and friends for their support in the harvest. Although it started as a farmers festival, today it has become a national festival for all Tamils irrespective of their origins, caste or even religion. It is as popular in urban areas as is in rural areas.

Pongal is the one of the biggest festival in Tamilnadu. There will be 3 or 4 days continuous holidays announced by state government.

Kempen Boikot Barang Israel - Explained

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

I guess many of u wudn't understand the article below. So, let me explain wat it is all about. Well the company listed below is assumed to been helping the Israelis in support of Palestine War. The government has noted that these companies had been in supportive of Israel's action.

Ok..now everyone gets a clearer picture.. Well i juz been thinking about this is juz another crap that has been created.. Well logicly, what these companies are going to lose if we boycott of buying their things.. Need to be mention here that all these are needed in our daily life.. Is der any1 hu is willing to try Malaysian product assuming it is a quality product..Well for the company it's nothing much in lose bcuz they are international companies who dun rely on the Malaysian market...Let me ask dis question;

" Are we really going to boycott these product"
"Don't you want to have starbuck once a week"
"Are the company going to shut down from the effect of boycott"
"Will Israel stop bombings if it doesn't gain support"

Well, frankly speaking from the human rights aspect i feel that what Israel doing is wrong.. But let me give you another case...

  • The problem is with the idealogy of both the leaders the country,Israel & Palestine
  • Leaders are sitting on a couch listening to the news and they juz ignore the life's of many people.. To date, there have been over half a million lifes gone in the Middle East..

So, what about life of other people.. Is people life is worth watching latest news from satelite... Leaders - choice of people to lead them.. What will happen to the nation when the leader himself are not doing the right thing...

Dear frenz, i really hoped that peace would be restored in the Middle East..What's de point of being happy when other people is still suffering in other parts of the world.. Juz think about it frenz.. Robbing happiness of someone is juz like killing someone slowly..roughly..unforgiveable..

Relation - World - Brothers ???

Well today i attended class on Ethnic Relation and the lecturer was asking everyone "Kalau saya kata saya adalah saudara kamu, kamu setuju?" She asked a malay guy n he said "setuju puan".. Den he asked two chinese guy n both of dem said impossible.. Den she asked me since i'm de only Indian in that class.. N i was reluctant to say " Setuju" cuz from what i learn in BIBLE it say that "we people on earth are sons and daughters of ADAM n EVE" since they r de 1st human to live on earth.. but i answered "mungkin".. Den my professor said that according to encyclopedia that we are indeed brothers n sisters with no bound of religion nor race... So y we r killing each other.. We r related to one another... Y being so cruel and injustice to people around u.. Wud u do dis to ur relatives??

Well.. In my opinion i think what my prof is telling is really true.. N i don't noe y people are trying to deny all dis fact.. Iraq War.. Middle East Struggle..All doens't make sense to me.. Y der aren't people to guide this people.. So called leader still being conservative.. Wats de point of killing people and proudly say "I have win dis nation"... Its juz dont make sense to me... Pity the people of the nation.. What wrong they did.. Showing off power to other people dont make you a great leader.. A great leader is who can bring people together and people have faith in him to build a great nation of history.. No great leaders in the history used force n gain people's support.. Examples of gone great leader.. Mahatma Gandhi, Dr.Martin Luther King, Dr.Sun Yat Sen .. Though dey have not lead a nation deir capability of being a great leader is undeniable..

Getting wins by using ur brain is more respectable than conquering a country by man force.. Using other people to get a victory is nothing but juz a simple act of cowardness... Killing infants n poor people is unforgiveable...

What we gain in earth not goin to bring us anywhere nor will follow us after we die.. Let us juz appreciate those who are still living in this earth cuz nothing is permanent in earth except what has been before we came... God has been so good to give us such a beautiful world... Destroying earth and innocent live is juz like ignoring HIM..

Gracias..

31 Ways To Make Girls Smile

Saturday, January 3, 2009

1.Don't hug her friends or your friends that are girls cause she'll feel left out
2. Hold her hand at any moment . . . even if its just for a second.
3. Hug her from behind.
4. Leave her voice messages to wake up.
5. Wrestle with her.
6. Don't go hang out with your ex when she's not with you, you might not realize how badly it hurts her.
7. If you're talking to another girl, when you're done talking, walk over and
hug her and kiss her.... Let her know she's yours and they aren't.
8. Write her notes or call her just to say "Hi"... And not just at night after you've already been out with other girls.
9. Introduce her to your friends . . . as your girlfriend.
10. Play with her hair.
11. Pick her up.
12. Get upset if another guy touches her and she doesn't like it.
13. Make her laugh, if you can make her laugh, you can make her do
anything.
14. Let her fall asleep in your arms.
15. If she's mad at you, kiss her.
16. If you care about her, then tell her
17. Every guy should give their girl 3 things: a stuffed animal(she'll hug it every time she goes to sleep), jewelry (she'll treasure it forever), and one of his t-shirts (she'll most likely wear it to bed).
18. Treat her the same around your friends as you do when you're alone.
19. Look her in the eyes and smile.
20. Hang out with her on weekends.
21. Kiss her in the rain.
22. Kiss her just for the heck of it
23. If your listening to music, let her listen too.
24. Remember her birthday and get her something, even if it's simple and inexpensive, it came from YOU. it means all the world to HER. it's the thought that counts.
25. When she gives you a present on your birthday, Christmas, or just whenever, take it and tell her you love it, even if you don't (it'll make her happy.)
26. Always call her when you say you will, it may not seem like it, but it DOES hurt her and makes her think you don't care, so call even if you can only talk for a minute. Girls don't necessarily have to have hour-long conversations every night but it's nice for us to hear your voice even for a quick hello.
27. Give her what she wants. ANYTHING.
28. Recognize the small things . . . they usually mean the most.
29. Tell her she's beautiful, she needs to know her striving is working.
30. Hang out with her whenever you are free and you should be free to hang
with your girlfriend all the time.
31. If u care about her...SHOW her!
