Notebook - Netbook..now Ultrabook..damn its cool
Saturday, July 30, 2011
Ultrabook devices will be rolled out in roughly three phases, with both USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt technologies as key features, according to an Intel blog item posted Thursday. Intel and PC makers are staking a big part of their laptop and hybrid device future on Ultrabooks.
The Asus UX21 Ultrabook.
The blog item, which begins by referring to a "strategic inflection point"--a phrase used often by founder and former CEO Andy Grove--drops other catchphrases, such as "sea change." Is this the usual product hype? Probably not.
Ultrabooks may in fact radically alter laptop computing. Look no further than the MacBook Air. Apple's newest iteration of the Air is probably the best example of the future of laptop computing. It's remarkably thin (less than 0.8 inches) and light (less than 3 pounds), yet powerful.
But that's just Apple, of course. The Ultrabook, on the other hand, is really about PC makers: companies like Asus, Dell, Sony, and Hewlett-Packard. Asus is already on the record with two Ultrabooks due this fall: the UX21 and UX31, while HP is rumored to have Ultrabooks in the works.
And eventually what an Ultrabook becomes is anybody's guess. "Eventually you'll think of an Ultrabook as a tablet when you want it, a PC when you need it," Intel said. The Ultrabook's three phases, according to Intel:
- Phase 1: This was kicked off when Intel introduced its latest Ultra-Low Voltage 2nd Generation Intel Core processors in June that will bring new systems to shelves this holiday season.
- Phase 2: Centers around the next generation of Intel micro-architecture, code-named Ivy Bridge, with processors scheduled for availability in systems in the first half of 2012. Faster I/O such as USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt technologies are also part of Intel's ongoing work to drive the PC platform forward.
- Phase 3: 2013 Intel micro-architecture dubbed Haswell. Accelerating the Ultrabook and reinventing the capabilities of the laptop in sleek systems.
Other attributes include "ultra-fast start up" based on Intel's Rapid Start Technology, which boots up a system almost instantly from a deep sleep, and extended battery life: Ultrabooks will offer 5 hours of battery life even in the sleekest form factors, with some systems delivering 8 hours or more for all-day usage.

Skype to Facebook Integration - New Updates
Skype has released the latest update to its online calling software for Windows, offering more options for Facebook users.
Officially out of beta since Wednesday, the latest Skype 5.5 for Windows lets you check which of your Facebook friends are online and available to chat, all without having to leave Skype. Simply clicking on the View menu in the Skype software and then choosing Facebook Friends shows you the list.
By clicking on and then closing the Skype Home screen, you can also update your Facebook status and scroll down to view your entire Facebook wall.
Beyond the Facebook integration, Skype says that its latest version offers improved controls for video and group calls for Windows, better call reliability, and various design changes in the interface.
For some reason, I was unable to directly update my current version of Skype (5.3) to 5.5. Clicking on the "Check for Updates" link in the Help menu told me I was already running the latest version. I had to manually download and install the 5.5 version to get the new update.
But once it was installed, I was able to use Skype 5.5 to view my online Facebook friends, access my wall, and post status updates just as easily as I could in Facebook

Mozilla OS vs Google Android OS
Mozilla revealed preliminary plans today to take the Gecko engine that drives its Firefox browser and turn it into an open-source operating system that will eventually work on phones and tablets.
Called Boot to Gecko, it is known that the source code will be released to the public "in real-time," wrote Andreas Gal, a Mozilla researcher. Gecko is the rendering engine that powers Firefox and the e-mail client Thunderbird. By contrast, while Google's Android mobile operating system is open source, the main development work on it does not become available until after Google has green-lit its publication--sometimes not until months afterward.
"We will do this work in the open, we will release the source in real-time, we will take all successful additions to an appropriate standards group, and we will track changes that come out of that process. We aren't trying to have these native-grade apps just run on Firefox, we're trying to have them run on the web," Gal said in a forum post. Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of technical strategy, said that the Boot to Gecko apps won't use the Android SDK but instead run new and current Web app APIs
He also identified four areas for development. One is new Web APIs, which means building "prototype APIs for exposing device and OS capabilities to content." This is how the operating system would support current essential mobile features such as telephony, SMS, cameras, USB, Bluetooth, and near-field chips. A second area for development is to build a privilege model, which is a key security feature for ensuring that new features are "safely exposed to pages and applications," he said.
Boot to Gecko will include some low-level Android code for kernel and driver support so that it can run on Android devices. This does not exist yet, and porting it to a new system could prove to be extremely challenging. Then there is the final area of development--that of applications. The idea behind Boot to Gecko is to create a system where native Web apps can run just as well as the native apps for iOS do on that device.
Shaver added that the company is looking at Tegra 2 devices because they offer hardware acceleration of open audio and video formats.
For people who want to get a stronger idea of what Boot to Gecko will amount to, Gal noted that its "starting point" is a device running Firefox for Android as its homescreen, with some custom APIs thrown in. He also admitted in that post that there is an "ultimate goal" to the project, that of "breaking the stranglehold of proprietary technologies over the mobile device world."

Earthquake Series Vol.1 @ Japan

1st Quake
Japan earthquake 3rd day March 2011: 7.2 earthquake in Japan Tokyo ‘There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but officials are still assessing the situation. The quake struck at 11:45 local time clock on Wednesday and was centered about 300 miles north of Tokyo. The meteorological agency says the quake hit at 11:45 local time clock on Wednesday and was about 300 kilometers north of Tokyo at a depth of 10 km centered.
The advice, on Wednesday said that the tsunami height expected to be about 0.5 meters.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 169 kilometers off the east coast of Honshu.
Japan’s government broadcaster NHK reported that the focus of the tremor was 10 km (6 miles) below the surface of the earth, off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.
Japan, with a large earthquake zone, earthquakes in different sizes seen in the region frequently. Apart from frequent low intensity earth tremors and occasional volcanic activity, destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, which are common to several times per century.
Sendai, Japan 2011
2nd Quake
Some press reports have criticized seismologists for failing to forecast the force and location of the magnitude-8.9 earthquake -- which was stronger and hundreds of miles north of the site that, as CNN reports, Japan's government has worried since 1976 will be struck by a massive tremor. In an article boldly titled, "Japan: The 'Big One' hit, but not where they thought it would," The Washington Post's Joel Achenbach states:
Scientists today said the event has once again humbled them, reinforcing a growing sense that the field of seismology needs to ditch some of its presumptions about major earthquakes. But the truth is that the scientific community has never claimed the ability to precisely forecast a quake, even though seismological analysis has made massive strides in recent decades with the development of real-time global-monitoring technology.
"We can't predict earthquakes," Dr. Daniel McNamara, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey,"It's a very complex system."
McNamara described seismology as a relatively new science, still "in its infancy," and said that while seismologists can now locate an earthquake anywhere in the world within 10 minutes and "give reasonable warning for volcanic activity and tsunami," ironclad earthquake-predicting capabilities are still beyond the field's reach.
That doesn't mean, however, that Japan's decades preparing for a large earthquake southeast of Tokyo -- dubbed the "Great Tokai Earthquake" -- were in vain, McNamara said. "If you find a scientist that has been studying a specific region and predicting an earthquake and one occurs out of that region, they will say it’s a surprise, but it's still an active region," he said.To that point, Friday's massive quake was "not a surprise at all," according to McNamara -- "it's a very active region."
As for the implications this earthquake has in relation to other seismic activity around the world, McNamara said science hasn't developed to the point to be able to make those kind of inferences. He "wouldn't dismiss the possibility" of a connection to the recent quake in New Zealand, or even the possibility of a quake coming to California -- as they are connected to the same plate system -- but "there's no way to prove it at this point," he said.
Though some believe earthquake activity to be increasing in frequency and strength around the world, McNamara said this isn't the case. "The 1960s were more active than now," he said. "One of the issues is that we have much better technology than decades past, so we can report on earthquakes more than ever before."
McNamara emphasized that the same progress with technology is apparent in the media, only adding to the perception that these events are occurring at shrinking intervals. But he noted that other than aftershock tremors, no increased seismic activity has been noticed in any areas near Japan's enormous earthquake since the quake hit.

Earthquake Series Vol.2 @ China
Parts of a supermarket and a hotel caved in, while sidewalks were lined with injured on blankets, being shielded from the sun by large vendor umbrellas. The official Xinhua News Agency reported that 24 people had been killed, including four students, citing the Yingjiang county government in Yunnan province. Another 207 people were injured, 33 of them in critical condition. The website of the Chinese government earthquake monitoring station said the magnitude-5.8 quake was centered in Yingjiang and struck just before 1 p.m. (0500 GMT) at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers). The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.4 and at a deeper 21 miles (35 kilometers).
Some 1,200 houses or apartments were crushed by the quake, said Zhao Yunshan, director of Yingjiang government press office. More than 127,000 people have been evacuated to nearby shelters, Xinhua reported, citing the Civil Affairs Ministry.According to the USGS, more than 1 million people may have been exposed to the worst shaking.
Vice President Xi Jinping, expected to be the country's next leader, called for an "all-out" effort to get food, water and clothing to those affected by the quake, Xinhua said.More than 1,000 soldiers have been sent to aid in rescue efforts, the news agency said. The quake hit while many people, including students, were home for a customary midday rest, CCTV reported.
Tremors continued to be felt in the area throughout the afternoon and evening, according to CCTV reporter Shu Qian, who was at the disaster scene in Yingjiang County. The quake's epicenter was in Shiming Village, just over a mile (two kilometers) from the county seat, but triggered a power outage across Yingjiang, which has a population of about 300,000 people, Xinhua said.
By evening, the power supply was still cut off, though water and communications didn't appear to be damaged, Shu said.A government team that includes the Civil Affairs Ministry has been dispatched to the quake-stricken area, CCTV said. About 5,000 tents, 10,000 quilts and 10,000 coats are also being sent from the central government. The mountainous area lies 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) southwest of Beijing, close to the border with Myanmar, and is home to many ethnic groups on both sides of the border, which sees heavy traffic in people and goods.
Xinhua said the quake-prone region has been hit by more than 1,000 minor tremors over the past two months. The Myanmar Meteorological Department released a statement saying a quake had hit some 230 miles (370 kilometers) northeast of Mandalay, the country's second-largest city. The statement did not mention injuries, damage or the specific area of Myanmar most affected by the quake. Authorities in the tightly ruled country tend not to immediately discuss the effects of natural disasters.Much of the area on the Myanmar side been under the control of various armed ethnic groups, who have battled the Myanmar military to remain free from central government control.

Earthquake Series Vol.3 @ Myanmar
Yangon, Myanmar 2011
Tremors spread as far away as Bangkok, almost 800 kilometers from the epicenter, as well as to Hanoi and parts of China during the earthquake Thursday, which the U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS, measured at magnitude 6.8.
A Myanmar official warned that there could be "many more casualties" in the town of Tarlay, close to the epicenter, as he confirmed 11 men and 13 women had been killed when the quake struck.
"Five monasteries and 35 buildings collapsed in the town. Those people were killed when the buildings collapsed," said the official, who declined to be named, adding some areas were difficult to access because roads were damaged.
Authorities in Thailand have confirmed one woman was killed on the Thai side of the border.

Friday, March 11, 2011
i guess we are still aware of the 2004 tsunami which wiped out the banda acheh town in north sumatera indonesia few years ago. well, the nightmare are back in japan now and many lives are in danger. the world doesnt end just because this is happening. it's happening for a reason and the reason is to make the ecology of the world to be in dynamic equlibrium so that the earth will be more balance with all creature. meanwhile. we just can hope that many people wouldnt be killed by this giant wall of water. condolences to the family of the victim. it's a sad thing that people die of natural disaster. we thereby should be more alert with these changes of the environment. so many technilogy we found, yet not a single tsunami warning cud predicted of the waves. so we shud enhance the current technology we have to save more life in future. Adios, may GOD bless JAPAN.. WE PRAY FOR YOU!!
SILENT MOMENTS (10mins)
May the ever almighty god bless this people who are affected and give them shelter to protect them from any disaster and give courage to the afflicted family, those who lost their loved ones, may the have strength to continue move on their life and may obstacles they pass is no longer. Lord, guide the people to your way so that may their embrace your grace and mercy. May ur divine light of hope, love, courage, care pour upon them. We ask this to you O God, through your son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, one God forever and ever. Amen.
